Thomas Wright makes his mark, duly witnessed by Thomas Brooks and David Johnson. 29 January 1793. VERY BRITTLE

View		 PHILEMON WRIGHT of Woburn, Mass. brings suit against JONATHAN FASSETT of Bennington in the County of Bennington in the State of Vermont, for the recovery of monies owed to him in the amount of One Thousand dollars. The Sheriff is commanded to attach the goods, chattels and estate of Jonathan Fassett to achieve this aim. Wright had to post certain bonds at the time of bringing suit. Dated at Windsor 4 November 1797. VERY BRITTLE.

View		 This document is unique on several counts. In no way is it original. It outlines, at some length the one quarter of land centered on the area of the Township of Hull which was put at the disposal of PHILEMON WRIGHT and associates. The date mentioned in the preamble is 1 FEBRUARY 1802. Further along in the text, on page 2, the follow is noted
“And whereas our well beloved PHILEMON WRIGHT for himself and several associates, hereinafter named by petition bearing the date 17 APRIL 1797 has humbly requested…etc…etc.”
(Note: The year 1797 was one of the years, prior to the final year of 1800 when the Wright Party settled on the land, that WRIGHT came to look over the property.)
As anyone can see this is a typed copy prepared on 8 MARCH 1889 (after typing machines had been invented).
The date of registry in Québec [City] was 14 JANUARY 1806 and in Second Register of Letters Patent 25 JANUARY 1806 and thirdly in the Auditor’s records on 3 APRIL 1806.
The surprising note is that the King on the English throne in whose name this grant was made was GEORGE III, who was to die in 1820 a long time after the above events.
Finally the date of grant, on cover is 3 JANUARY 1806. A remarkable document.

The paper is ruled in columns of 7 RANGES. To the left is a list of those who received lots. The lot number held by each person is placed in one of the squares under the appropriate range.

It is believe that this list was prepared by JAMES FINLAYSON TAYLOR who was clerk for Wright Taylor married MARY (POLLY) WRIGHT (Philemon Wright’s daughter) as her second husband, her first husband was Ephraim Chamberlain – above listed.

View		 Letter dated 17 Dec 1823 from Quebec [City] from PHILEMON WRIGHT to R[UGGLES] WRIGHT ESQ, Hull, Grand River. The letter has no postage stamp nor envelope but had been sealed with red wax. The writing and spelling is so bad that it’s difficult to understand Wright’s message. He advises that L. BIGELOW left Quebec on the date of this letter, headed for Buckingham. [Note the family name of Bigelow is well known in Buckingham in in the 20th century.]

When built Wright is to supply agreed amounts of cut timber for sale by Syms at Quebec City by the end of the year 1848. As security Wright is to offer several lots which are in his possession, which are cited in the document of agreement.
