Churches and Places of Worship
St. Camillus Roman Catholic, Farrelton
In this northerly part of the Townships of Wakefield and Low a log chapel was built on land donated in the early 1830s by Samuel Lord, a lumber merchant. It was not until 1859 that the stone church of Saint-Joseph-de-Wakefield was erected. The name of the church was changed to St. Camillus some time during the 1860s. The church was damaged during the blasting for the railway construction. It was taken down and some of the stones were used in the foundation to build St. Camillus Roman Catholic church in 1915.
This is the second church in Farrelton, built in 1860 and was called St. Joseph’s. It was damaged by the blasting for the railway and a new church was built in 1915, the name changed to St. Camillus. Some of the stones from the old foundation were used in the making of the new church. This second church stood much closer to the river and was where the cemetery is today. C. 1910 (R. Daly collection).
