St. Andrew’s United Church, Wakefield

St. Andrew’s United Church

In 1904, from ashes of it's predecessor, rose St. Andrew's United in Wakefield. Sitting on the original foundation, it bears the date of 1871 carved in stone. A sturdy brick structure, measuring 40x63 feet, it's two heavy wooden front doors face the main street of the town and river. A stairway on either side in the vestibule leads into the sanctuary with it's gothic windows, plastered walls and pine flooring. The original seating allowed space for approximeatly 250 people. Facing the central pews, and raised several feet is the chancel, backed by a panel of oak. There is a choir loft to the left of the chancel that seats 20. The vestry, behind the chancel, was used for Sunday school classes, nursery anda place for the choir to gather, and, more recently a space for funeral wakes.

St. Andrew’s United Church

In 1955, the growing Sunday school encouraged expansion of the facilities. With no adjacent land property available, a church basement was excavated. This now provides a church hall seating 100, a kitchen and bathroom.

As of October 2018, it was listed as permanently closed and is now a private residence.
