Christ Church, Poltimore

A free grant of land in the township of Portland (later Poltimore) on the edge of St. Pierre de Wakefield was given to Bishop William Bennett Bond of Montreal in 1886. A log church had been erected on that land in 1869. The first Christ Church, Portland was consecrated on October 5, 1877 by Bishop Ashton Oxenden of Montreal. In 1902, the parish register records the church name as Christ Church, Poltimore. The mission continued to flourish and expand and the foundation for a new church was laid in 1907. The last service in the old Christ Church was held on January 19, 1908. The building was deconsecrated by Bishop John Cragg Farthing of Montreal in November of the same year. The second Christ Church held its first service on January 26, 1908 and was consecrated by Bishop Farthing in July of the following year. In 1918, the name Portland was officially changed to Poltimore. By 1999, repairs had been made to the church building. Christ Church, Poltimore is currently part of the parish of the Eastern Outaouais.
