“Women’s Organizations in the Hills”
Speaker George Betts
Wakefield Library, Wakefield, Quebec - September 16, 2019
The Wakefield Library was host to the first GVHS presentation of the 2019 autumn series. GVHS President, Marc Cockburn began with a short rundown of upcoming events over the fall and winter. He then introduced the evening’s speaker and local historian, George Betts. George presented his research on the various women’s organizations that formed in the Wakefield, Alcove and Rupert communities from the days of prohibition to present day. From campaigning for prohibition laws, to collecting blood donations to send overseas during the war years, these remarkable women did so much more than just hold bake sales, fundraise and organize church dinners but were also strong activists to effect change for the betterment of their communities.
