The Hills as seen through the eyes of history

Whether it's a historical walking tour of Alcove, an evening of poetry and songs about the Gatineau Valley, or a presentation on what Cantley looked like before the flood, the Gatineau Valley Historical Society provides historically accurate fun.

This time round, the society, which promotes history and heritage from around the Gatineau Valley, invites you to its annual dinner and awards evening. Every year, the society celebrates its membership and community by handing out awards to indizations that have helped out.

According to board member Shirley Brown, this year is special as the evening will celebrate 40 years of publishing 'Up the Gatineau!'.

"It's a pretty big deal because Louise [Schwartz], the editor, has kept a tight wrap on the details. Nobody knows what's actually in it this year," Brown said.

The evening also includes a talk by guest speaker Dr. Helen E. Parson, a retired professor from the department of geography and environmental studies at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo. Parson is also one of the first contributors to 'Up the Gatineau!', penning articles back in 1977 for volume three, in 1983 for volume nine, and for this year's 40th volume. The longtime Blue Sea Lake cottager will take a look back at how the Gatineau Valley has changed over the years.

"It's really a chance to get out and socialize," Brown said. "It's been 52 years that we've been doing this and folks should support history in the Gatineau Valley. It's pretty important to remember the past."

The event will take place at Camp Fortune, 300 Chemin Dunlop, on Tuesday, May 20 starting at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $40 and can be purchased at the door or reserved by contacting Shirley Brown at 819-827-1999.
