Trading & Dealing By-Law
At a general session of the West Hull Municipal Council held on 4 June 1894 By-Law No. 16 came into being. Herewith:
BY-LAW NO. 16
It is hereby ordained and enacted by by-law of the Municipal Council of the West Part of the township of Hull and the said Council doth hereby enact and ordain:
That the following persons residing or not in this Municipality are obliged to take out a license from this Corporation for the exercise in this Municipality of their trade, occupation or calling and that no person shall be allowed to carry out such trade, occupation or calling without such license, namely:
Every wholesale or retail trader, merchant or dealer residing within the limits of this Municipality shall take out a license for which the following fee shall be paid:
A licence fee of two dollars for every retail or wholesale trader or dealer selling groceries and provisions and also dry-goods, boots & shoes, etc.
A license fee of four dollars for every butcher or baker.
Every wholesale or retail trader, merchant or dealer who by himself or by others should come in this Municipality to carry on their trade or calling and also every butcher who shall sell or offer for sale any meat shall pay a licence fee of twenty dollars.
Every baker not residing within the limits of this Municipality shall pay a licence fee of eight dollars.
Every vendor of coal oil shall pay a licence fee of eight dollars.
The amount of the licence fee shall be employed for the improvement of Roads and bridges.
Every person residing or not in this Municipality who shall not comply with the present By-law shall upon conviction before two justices of the Peace, for the district of Ottawa, be condemned to pay a fine of not more than twenty dollars, or in default shall be imprisoned in the common gaol of Aylmer for a time of not more than fifteen days.
The present By-law shall come in force 1st of July next. The license fee shall be paid 1st July of each year and shall be collected in full for any part of the year.
