North Wakefield Mission (continued)
We left our hero delivering two sermons, both for the price of one - why go anywhere else?
His discourses were rich in thought, and full of spiritual power. They were indeed such sermons as could scarcely fail to convey along with them light and blessing.
On Monday afternoon, a tea was provided in good style by the generous-hearted ladies of Masham and Wakefield, which was thoroughly enjoyed by about 300 persons, many of whom had travelled thirty miles or more in order to be at the festive gathering.
After the tea a public meeting was held which was presided over by Andrew Pritchard, Esq. The Treasurer of the Trust or Building Fund, Mr. Geo. B. Johnson, read a financial statement, showing that $2,400 had been expended, of which $1,800 had been raised previous to the dedication services. The audience was then delighted by a series of eloquent and practical addresses well adapted to the occasion, from the Revs. McCoombe, of Aylwin, J. White (Presbyterian) of Wakefield and D. Connolly, of Sherbrooke.
The choir contributed largely to the enjoyment of the evening by favouring the assembly with a choice assortment of music.
A list of supplement subscriptions was handed in toward the cost of the church, which with the collections and proceeds of the tea, amounted to $370, leaving a small balance of debt.
The good friends of this Mission (many of whom do not abound in this world goods) have put forth very considerable exertion in the erection of the House of God.
May God fill His house with His glory.
