Municipality of South Hull
Many readers will remember the Municipality of Chelsea when it was the Municipality of West Hull. Southerly of West Hull was the Municipality of South Hull. It was made a separate municipality in 1879, four years later than West Hull.
The first mayor of South Hull was William McKay Wright, M.P. (1840-1882) the eleventh son of Ruggles Wright Sr. (1793-1863) and Rosina McDouall (1806-1862). (Ruggles himself was the third son of Philemon Wright).
Wright served from 1 Sept. 1879 to 7 Feb. 1881. Claudius Maxwell, son of Frank Maxwell served as 2nd mayor from 7 Feb. 1881 to 1 Feb. 1892.
Robert H. Conroy, son of Robert Conroy was mayor from 1 Feb. 1892 until his death in 1904. The term expired 6 Feb. 1905, at which time Samuel H. Edey (1850-1910) son of Luther Edey and Mary A. Maxwell, was elected. He had been a member of the council since the formation of the municipality.
David Stewart, son of Robert Stewart and Jane Benedict, had been secretary-treasurer from the beginning. Gard's "Humours of the Valley" was published in 1906. The source of information for the above ceases upon that date.
