Much Ado
Herewith certain minutes of West Hull's Council Meetings conducted during the summer and fall of 1884:
General meeting - 2 June 1884
Motion: That the road on the east side of Meech Lake being destroyed by the high water caused by closing the dam on said lake by the Diamond Match Manufacturing Company, the Secretary is hereby instructed to inform said company that unless said road is repaired immediately proceedings will be taken against them.
General meeting - 7 July 1884
Motion: That the Secretary Treasurer is hereby instructed to inform the Diamond Match Manufacturing Company that the road on the east side of Meech Lake not having been repaired, this Council has instructed the Road Inspector of District No. 8 to make an estimate of the damage done by the high water, and that according to the report of said Road inspector the amount of the damage done is $27 and unless said amount be paid immediately proceedings will be taken for its recovery.
General meeting - 1 September 1884
Motion 1: That the Secretary-Treasurer is hereby instructed to inform Mr. Prins, Manager of the Diamond Match Manufacturing Company that this Council has appointed Councillor Welch to go and visit the damage done at the road on the east side of Meech Lake, together with the Road Inspector of the District, and the said Councillor will visit said road on Monday, the 15th inst., and that Mr. Prins is hereby invited to attend the above mentioned visit to come to an understanding.
Motion2: That the sum of $25 is hereby granted to Ant. Farrell Esq. to be spent on the road on the east side of Meech Lake; said amount to be paid as soon as funds are on hand.
General meeting - 6 October 1884.
The report of Councillor Welch concerning the damage done by high water on the road on the east side of Meech Lake is given verbally, Mr. Prins, the Manager of the Diamond Match Manufacturing Company proposed to pay $15 for all damages done this year and $10 annually during the time they will make timber in the district. In the opinion of Councillor Welch Mr. Prins should pay $20 for the above mentioned damages but the offer of $10 yearly should not be entertained.
Motion: That the report of Councillor Welch concerning the damages done on the east side of Meech Lake is hereby accepted and the secretary treasurer is hereby instructed to inform Mr. Prins that it is the opinion of the council that $20 should be paid, but that the offer of any sum to be paid annually as a recompense of damages on the above mentioned road cannot be entertained.
