Gatineau River: Then and Now
Lower Gatineau River from the air in 1926 and 1997
Set 20 - Wakefield Covered Bridge (Click on images for additional details)
The THEN image shows the Gendron Covered Bridge, constructed in 1914. The bridge would last for the next 70 years until the night of July 11, 1984, when arsonists torched the structure. A major mobilization of the community over the next 13 years resulted in a new Wakefield Covered Bridge, inaugurated in 1997, shown in the NOW image. Two articles about rebuilding the bridge are Neil Faulkner's "A Bridge for our Times: Rebuilding the Wakefield Covered Bridge" and Ernie Mahoney's "A Bridge A-Building." Both appear in Volume 23 of Up the Gatineau!
